Antal Doráti
From Minnewiki
Antal Doráti was born and educated in Hungary, and came to Minnesota to lead the then Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra in 1949. He was especially noted for his way with colorful, rhythmic scores (the Tchaikovsky ballets, for example) and for his advocacy of contemporary music, particularly that of his compatriot Bartók. The recordings he and the orchestra made together were widely hailed for their musicianship and also their technical excellence as recordings.
Though mostly remembered as a conductor, Doráti was also a composer, and wrote an autobiography which contains some lively anecdotes from his time in Minnesota.
