History
Scott Yoho formed the Auto Body Experience in 1989. Joining him were Tom Hambleton (keyboards, vocals), Pete Linman (bass, vocals) and Dave King (drums). By the release of their self-titled release in 1992, Erik Fratzke (bass, vocals) and Matt Jacobs (drums) had replaced Pete and Dave, although both bassists and drummers can be heard on the first CD.
This lineup remained unchanged for Smash Hits, released in 1995.
By the release of A Tribute to Carhenge (1999) the bass and keyboard duties were handled by Tom Larson (bass, vocals) and Mike Dripps (keyboards). The group also increased in size, adding Max Wendt (saxophone), Tom Twiss (trumpet) and Jim Guckenberg (percussion). Additionally Bill Scherer is heard vocalizing on "Mr. Potato Head" and singing lead on the hidden zero-track "Sexy Thing."
The next line-up, heard on Forgotten Lots (2005), sees Dean White taking over the drum duties, Trey ZehrGrimm on keyboards and vocals, and Kent Peterson (percussion, vocals) assuming the hand percussion tasks.
More recently Greg H. Smith took over on keyboards and Jason Weismann has been playing the sax after Max Wendt moved to Madison. Other guest saxophonists have included and Terry Peffer and Ruston Reynolds.
Since 1989 the Auto Body Experience has shared the stage with such swell artists as Adrian Belew, Brave Combo, Dread Zeppelin, Moxy Fruvous, and Something Fierce.
On August 17, 2005 they were interviewed by Terry Gross on the National Public Radio show Fresh Air.
They often play the second Friday of each month at the Eagles Club in south Minneapolis: see the calendar at http://minneapoliseagles34.org/
