Biography
In the six degrees of separation between John Cage and Judas Priest, Chris Strouth is number three.
Chris Strouth is the founder of UltraModern Records (Ousia, Savage Aural Hotbed, the Vibro Champs, Stan Ridgway), formerly the Director of Artists and Product for the Twin/Tone Record Group, where he oversaw dozens of releases and a stable of 10 labels. He was the Director of Artists and Product for Innova Recordings, the label of the American Composers Forum. Innova is a non-profit label dealing primarily in Experimental, Jazz, Neo Classical and world music. It was there that he exec produced a Grammy nominated disc by “the Clouds”
Strouth is the impresario behind Future Perfect Sound System, an experimental dub sound system with two records under their belt. Which had a three-year residency at the Fredrick R. Weisman Museum of Art, and did numerous pieces with the Walker Art Center, and Orchestra Hall. He also started the Red Eye Collaboration's Difficult Music series, the first new music series of its kind in the Twin Cities.
Forays into other music media include producing and hosting duties for the television music program “What.” Which documented the 90’s MPLS pop explosion, and “ Holiday in Dirt: 14 short films of the music of Stan Ridgway” which he produced with Rick Fuller.
As a producer he has worked on records ranging from the Intergalactic Contemporary Ensemble to the Vibro Champs and Thunder in the Valley. He has assembled two critically acclaimed records for Stan Ridgway, and sequenced and A&R’d countless others, for various groups from all over the world.
As a performer he has been in groups ranging from proto-noise experimentalists: King Paisley, Synth pop heroes: Ex- Boyfriends of Pamela, and more recently the Highly experimental group: A Most Happy Sound (with Lorren Stafford). Strouth played at all the usual suspects: (Walker, Weisman, First Avenue, Seventh Street Entry, Southern Theater, Red Eye, BLB)
As a designer his work has graced albums by Stan Ridgway, Skip Heller, Big Jay McNealy, Marlee MacLeod, Dylan Hicks, the University of Minnesota Bands, and numerous others.
