DEMO
From Minnewiki
History
DEMO (Diverse Emerging Music Organization) is a nonprofit Twin Cities organization whose mission is to support, educate and promote emerging musicians and enrich communities eager for diverse, multi-cultural, musical experiences.
DEMO was created by Steve McClellan, employee and manager of First Avenue Nightclub for 35 years, now currently teaching at McNally Smith College of Music and supporting local music through DEMO. It seeks to fulfill his vision of bringing people together through music.
DEMO rose out of the ashes of the First Avenue bankruptcy of 2004. It originally operated under the name, Developing Arts and Music Foundation (DAMF), but when the club changed hands and DAMF lost most of it's funds in the bankruptcy, it re-formed independent of the club with a new name and a new board.
The following is from a DEMO brochure:
DEMO Ideal
We believe that music has the power to bridge barriers and that musical diversity is critical to maintain a vibrant culture and community. We also believe that the most inspired music today comes not from the major record label conglomerates, but from artists who are often undiscovered, unproven - and independent.
For Music Lovers
DEMO believes that music lovers deserve to be exposed to multiple musical genres and artists, not only the mainstream. We strive to identify, present, educate and promote cutting-edge, diverse artists all in pursuit of entertaining the audience and having fun.For Emerging Musicians
DEMO helps you learn and grow by offering a variety of showcases where emerging musicians perform and network. First Avenue, Turf Club, The Uptown Bar, Nomad World Pub, Acadia Cafe, Station 4, The Red Room above the Loring Pasta Bar and the Hexagon Bar and are just a few of the venues that support our cause.DEMO holds weekly showcases at the Acadia Cafe, Station 4, 7th Street Entry, & The Red Room above the Loring Pasta Bar.
DEMO "Low-Fi" Thursdays at the Acadia Cafe give musicians a chance to perform in an intimate “theater” setting and also meet and network with other aspiring and veteran musicians in the cafe side after the show.
DEMO "Hi-Fi" Wednesdays at Station 4 in St. Paul give bands a spacious venue to make some noise.
DEMO has recently began a regular 18-plus Sunday night in the legendary 7th Street Entry. These shows provide a chance for young musicians to perform where many of the best bands of today got their start.
For Students
DEMO helps you put your education into action with events such as “Ink’d & Amp’d,” a student-produced showcase combining body art and music, at First Avenue.DEMO offers you volunteer and internship opportunities, where you can learn first-hand about the music business and work with both musicians and professionals who work with them.
DEMO partners with McNally Smith College of Music to offer educational outreach panel discussions. These panels give emerging artists an opportunity to learn from industry veterans and local well-traveled musicians.
For Venues
DEMO helps venues by developing and promoting showcases and special events featuring some of the best local emerging musicians to be found. These musical showcases bring in new business and contribute to a venue’s progressive reputation. For The Music Industry
DEMO helps the music industry by identifying and cultivating emerging musicians so that there are more opportunities to sample the diverse array of talent that the community has to offer.DEMO also helps the Music Industry by connecting emerging musicians with the services the industry offers, such as talent management, promotion, recording and production.
