Ed Dunn attended college in Oregon during the early 1980s and was impressed at the vibrant coffeehouse scene he encountered in Portland and in Seattle. Noticing that the Twin Cities' demographics and culture were similar to that found in Portland, Ed and his brother Dan decided in 1987 to open the first Dunn Bros coffeehouse, located on Grand Avenue in St Paul. Through franchising, Dunn Bros Coffee now has multiple branches throughout Minnesota as well as in five other states.
Many Dunn Bros branches offer live music performed by local musicians.
