The Fitzgerald Theater first opened 1910 as the Sam S. Schubert Theater. It was one of four memorial theaters built by the Schubert family in honor of their late brother Sam.
In 1933 it became a movie house that specialized in foreign films, and was re-christened the World Theater. In later years it played mostly first- and second-run features, but by 1980 (like many downtown theaters) it had closed and seemed destined for the wrecking ball.
However, Minnesota Public Radio purchased the World as the home for live broadcasts of its popular radio show "A Prairie Home Companion". In 1986 the theater underwent a lavish restoration.
In 1994, the World was renamed the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theater.
Recently, the 990-seat venue has played host to such diverse acts as Beck, Dan Hicks and Dar Williams.

Anecdotes
The theater enjoys a celebrity of it's very own -well, one that isn't Garrison Keillor, he's a ghost. 'Ben' is the name that theater employees use for the resident supernatural spirit. He is even acknowledged as permanently between In/Out on the office time clock.
