Painted Tapes is an independent collective of musicians & artists formed in 2007; members currently reside in Minneapolis MN, Seattle WA, & Rochester MN. (with some people traveling on & off). All members write, record, and preform original material.

Original Independent Music

In it's inception Painted Tapes acted as a conduit for a new wave of acoustic, lo-fi, and loop based solo artists and singer songwriters to emerge. Painted Tapes was created and promoted by Tomika & Kyle T. Strand in December of 2007. By the following summer; Jessica Buns, Sam Brakebill-Hacke, James Denzer, & David C. Steffens had all joined the label to form a collective. From 2007 to 2009 Painted Tapes artists were notorious for playing small intimate shows in which the artists were forced to project their voices and music rather then use electric equipment. This first wave of artists included; Assassins of the Night, David C. Steffens, I F*ck God, James Denzer, Kyle T. Strand, Lucid Daydreamer, and The Rochester Rut.

Painted Tapes artists focused creating more experimental and abrasive music by 2010, banding together and forming new groups with new influences and stylistic direction. New groups formed blended together many previously unexplored territories such as; avant-garde, ambient, noise, experimental, tribalism, free improvisation, indie-electronic, hints of dub and house, circuit bending, glitch, IDM, no-fi, experimental speedcore and distant derivatives of jazz. This transition allowed group performances to create many atmospheres; from experimental noise, tribalism, and glitched-out electronic manipulation to minimalist avant-garde improv acoustic, electronic dance music, and the ever present singer songwriter vibe. This second wave of groups include: Acetic Ascetic, Chinese Medicine, Dust Buns, G.J. Miller, G.J. Miller & K.T. Strand, Ghost Bird, Glass Grass, Hale-Bopp, I F*ck God, Molecular Davis, Paul Rée and the Nihilists, Rich Corporations, Robin Heil, Silkscreen Electric Chairs, The Big Button, Thee' Electric Chairs, & Trillion(heir)

Painted Tapes creates art, video, limited-handmade tapes, limited CD-R packaging, and digital releases.

By 2012 Painted Tapes reduced it's contributing artists down to seven people; Tomika, James Denzer, Dustica Buns, Matt Richner, Sam Brakebill-Hacke, Benry, & Robin Heil. Though, there continue to be other contributors to the video & artistic concepts created by our label, as well as other artists being produced & promoted by the five executive czars.
