Rich Mattson
From Minnewiki
Rich Mattson (b. 4/23/67) began playing music at age 4 when his grandparents bought him a concertina. In the third grade he joined the orchestra, intending to play the bass but winding up on the cello (the bass was too big!). By 8th grade he did move up to bass, but started playing the guitar and writing his own songs somewhere in between orchestra lessons. His first band was "Easy Tilt", with childhood friend Tim Leseman on drums and cousin Mark Saari on guitar. At age 15 the Mattson family moved to Colorado, where Rich promptly started another band, "Alibi", with new friends from high school. After 2 years in colorful Colorado the family moved back to the Iron Range and 17 year old Rich was back with his old friend TIm Leseman starting the group "The Imports" with Russell Bergum on bass and Jim Kennedy on keyboards. After 3 years of playing dances and clubs, Rich and his brother Glen relocated to Minneapolis with Russell Bergum where they started the folk group "Rich Mattson and the Glenrustles". Eventually that group turned to rock and roll and shortened the name to simply "The Glenrustles" with the addition of Jim Kennedy on various instruments. The Glenrustles soldiered on for 13 years in the twin cities with various lineup changes, most notably replacing Bergum with Greg McAloon on the bass. Guitarist Graham Gregorich took over for the showy Jim Kennedy in 1998. The Glenrustles released 4 albums on their own label (SMA Records) before disbanding in late 1999. They still reunite on occasion. Mattson went on to form Ol' Yeller with drummer Keely Lane early in 2000. The original lineup was Rich on guitar, Keely on drums, Greg McAloon on bass and guitar, Dale Kallman on bass and guitar, and Graham Gregorich on guitar. Eventually McAloon and Gregorich dropped out to persue other interests and guitarist Randy Casey joined the ranks of Ol' Yeller for around 1 year before the band became a trio in 2002. They released 3 albums and toured the entire country before losing bassist Kallman and replacing him again with Greg McAloon. In 2004 guitarist Andy Schultz joined Ol' Yeller and they released the album, "Sounder". In 2006 they released "Good Luck", their 5th and latest album.
In 1991 Mattson started recording bands and solo artists in his home recording studio, Flowerpot.
In 2005 he relocated back to the Iron Range of Minnesota, building a new studio in an old church.
Ol' Yeller continues to perform and record.
