The Roe Family Singers started as husband and wife duo Quillan and Kim Roe, in the Spring of 2004. Mrs. Roe had repeatedly asked Mr. Roe to start a band with her, since he was already a musician with Minneapolis natives Accident Clearinghouse. Finally, when Accident Clearinghouse wasn't available for a Johnny Cash tribute shortly after Cash's death, Mr. Roe called Mrs. Roe's bluff, and the Roe Family Singers was formed.
About a year later the Roes performed at a Neil Young Tribute in the newly revamped 331 Club in Nordeast Minneapolis, where they were introduced to owner Jarret Oulman. They liked the club so much that they approached Oulman about taking on a weekly gig at the fledgling club. Oulman consented, and the Roes began performing every Monday evening, a tradition they still carry on to this day.
The Roes soon instituted an open-stage policy, where they invited their friends to sit in with them to perform their favorite songs. In this way, Adam Wirtzfeld (Captain Yonder) soon joined them, playing the musical saw.
Since Wirtzfeld's induction, the band has expanded to eight members, including Dan Gaarder (Trailer Trash), Kurt Froehlich (Work of Saws, Electric Arc Radio Orchestra)), Rich Rue (Nikki and the Ruemates), Jon Olson (Bill Patten Trio, Caveman, House of Mercy Band), and Ric Lee. Former members include Tim Behary (Mud City Manglers) and Rob Davis, both of whom played the jug. Guests have included Mike Brady (Accident Clearinghouse, Pogue Brady Trio), Bill Quinn (TC Playboys, Jennifer Markey), Jim Parker, Ryan Young (Pert Near Sandstone, Trampled by Turtles), Dan Newton (Cafe Accordion Orchestra), Phil Nusbaum (Bluegrass Satruday Morning), and Jennifer Markey.
