Babes in Toyland was a hard rock band from Minneapolis. They were some of the precursors of what came to be known in the early 1990s as RiotGrrl, a subgenre of grunge music.
Originally, the first incarnation of the band consisted of Kat Bjelland, Courtney Love (of the band Hole) and Jennifer Finch (of L7). They were called Sugar Baby Doll. Lori Barbero and Michelle Leon joined after Love and Finch left for Seattle to pursue what would become their most notable bands. In 1991, the group did a recording on The Peel Sessions with John Peel in London. The group's break into the national scene came in 1992 with the release of their first full-length album Fontanelle. The following year, BIT toured with Sonic Youth at Lollapalooza.
The band split up and reformed several times throughout the '90s, with several side projects sometimes going at once, including Bjelland's band Katastrophy's Wife with husband Glen Mattson and Barbero's group Eggtwist.
In 1994, rock journalist Neil Karlen wrote a book on the band, entitled Babe in Toyland: The Making and Selling of a Rock and Roll Band. The book gives insight into the band and even more so, into the recording industry at the time.
