History
One of the Twin Cities area's leading amateur classical performance groups, the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra (BSO) debuted in 1963. Now in its 43rd continuous season, the BSO presents at least four concerts per year, alone and in collaboration with other area arts groups. In addition, the BSO has traveled and performed around the Metro area and in greater Minnesota.
In 2006, Bloomington Magazine readers picked the BSO as the city's best local band.
City of Bloomington park and recreation director Gene Kelly and nationally renowned jazz musician Paul W. "Doc" Evans, who served as music director until 1977, founded the BSO. Notable music directors since then have included Steven Amundson (St. Olaf College), William LaRue Jones (Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies), and Akira Mori (University of Minnesota).
Since the departure of Maestro Mori, the BSO has been under the baton of guest conductors. A search for a new conductor for the BSO is underway. The BSO continues to enjoy the services and talent of concertmaster Milana Reiche, who is also a valued member of the Minnesota Orchestra.
The BSO selects its members through regular competitive auditions and employs a limited number of freelance professional musicians as needed. More information about the BSO, including current concert calendars and ticketing information, can be found on its Web site.
