David de Young

Biography
David de Young moved to the Twin Cities from Milwaukee in 1988 and became a part of the Twin Cities music scene as an occasional performer of quirky piano and guitar songs at St. Anthony East (now Whiteys) in Northeast Minneapolis. He played piano in a band called The Buzz Aldrin Society with Dan Bussey, and together he and Bussey hosted an open stage at St. Anthony East every other Wednesday in the early 1990s. (Paul Metsa held down the other alternating Wednesday spots.)
In 1992, de Young and Troy Flemming began booking and running sound for the 24 Bar on Hennepin Avenue across from the Minneapolis Central Post Office. Helped along by the 24 Bar management giving them complete creative control and never charging patrons a cover charge, they built the bar into one of the most nurturing public spaces for developing Twin Cities bands to play at the time. de Young assembled another band during this period called My Boss Larry, that played a gig or two, once opening for Twin Tone band Beyond Zebra.
When the 24 Bar closed in early 1994, de Young took a break from the music scene. He re-visited it briefly with time spent on a project in the late 1990s providing free webspace for Minnesota bands and musicians before making a grand re-entrance by founding the Twin Cities renowned live music review site Howwastheshow in February, 2002. He still runs HowWasTheShow and contributes regular articles and photographs. He also serves podcast host and for HowWasTheShow's monthly CD Review show recorded for Minneapoliscast.
