History

Kari's Huldre names the ensemble of musicians who perform with Kari Tauring. Mostly appearing as the duo of Kari Tauring and Drew Miller, their sound combines eerie vocal techniques with primitive stav rhythm and the sweet trance inducing melodies of the dulcimer.

"Volva Songs" a her six song EP released May 28, 2008. Recorded at Dubnemo by Drew Miller and Scott Nieman who also accompany Kari on dulcimer, bass and Greek bouzouki.

Their shows may include David Stenshoel on fiddles and seljefloyte and "stavers in the house" Karin Odell, Robin Reyburn and others.

Pronounced "Hooldrah". Huldre are a branch of Fairy Folk in Norway who have a genre of tunes dedicated to them. Huldre stille (or troll stille) is a combination of pitches that corresponds to the tuning of a langeleik (something like a lap dulcimer played primarily by women). Huldre Lokk is means literally to call the huldre or a call by the huldre. It's a high pitched, nature tonality that shakes the DNA of the listener.

Kari began studying Nordic Roots material with the Runic alphabet in the late 1980's and the music was part of her life growing up in a Norwegian influenced household. She was introduced to the Huldre material while working with Karen Solgard (Hardanger Fiddler) and Steve Johnson (Shamanic Studies) in 2003. Since 2006 she has been performing and teaching Nordic Roots music and spiritual studies throughout the Midwest.
