History

Shortly following the break up of their former band, thevermontconnection, in the spring of 2003, Paul Connolly and Justin Kervina decided to expand on the instrumental direction that their last project had occasionally dabbled in. They asked ex-thevermontconnection drummer, Justin Gundelach to join them and spent the summer writing mostly new material. Upon ex-thevermontconnection guitarist, Aaron Richner's, return from his summer in Alaska, he was also invited to join the band. This lineup played several shows as the above mentioned lineup around the Duluth area during the fall of 2003.

Winter of 2003 brought several line up changes for the band. Bassist Matt Livingston was brought into the band for a brief period and recorded one track with the band for an unreleased compilation album. Scheduling problems between him and other members of the band forced him to quit shortly after, however, and he was never able to play a show with portrait. Also during the winter of 2003, Gundelach moved to Rocheter, MN. After trying out one other drummer, Portrait settled on Words to a Film Score guitarist-Nic Patullo on drums. Jason Lee of Farewell Tour was also added at this time as a multi-instrumentalist.

During the summer of 2006 they announced that both Jason Lee and Nic Patullo would be leaving the band. Mat Milinkovich has been named as the replacement drummer. To further change members, it was announced at the beginning of 2007 that Aaron Richner would be leaving the band and be replaced by ex-Holding Pattern guitarist Jesse Hoheisel.

Shortly prior to Richner's departure from the band, Portrait recorded their debut album. "Portrait of a Drowned Man" (self-titled) was recorded in the upper floor of The Electric Fetus-Duluth and produced by former Portrait of a Drowned Man drummer Nic Patullo. The album was released on Automaton Records in 2007. One track from the album, "The Marina is too Shallow", was named to Radio K-Now Like Photographs' list of the top 24 instrumental songs of 2007.
