The Mad Ripple is the nom de guerre of longtime Minneapolis writer and music lover Jim Walsh (Laughing Stock, REMs, St. Paul Pioneer Press, City Pages).
He is helped on his debut CD Sink and/or Swim by his brothers Jay Walsh (The Neglecters) and Terry Walsh (The Belfast Cowboys, Terry Walsh and 2 a.m., The Altared Boys) and his friends Jeaneen Gauthier (Jan, The Autumn Leaves), Rusty Jones (NNB, Safety Last, Front Porch Swingin' Liquor Pigs, Rockin' Pinecones, Curtiss A), Jim Tollefsrud (NNB, Safety Last, Twa Corbies, Front Porch Swingin' Liquor Pigs), Marc Perlman (The Neglecters, The Jayhawks, Golden Smog), Tim O'Reagan (The Leatherwoods, The Jayhawks), Jim Boquist (Good Joe, Son Volt, Paul Westerberg and His Only Friends), Dave Boquist(Son Volt, many others), Dave Krejci (Green Machine, The Reverend Angus Strychn, inventor of The Cleophone), Woody McBride (DJ ESP), Laura Mackenzie (Celtic music goddess) and all three strapping lads from The Gleam. The Mad Ripple's son Henry and daughter Helen Heyer-Walsh make cameo appearances on the CD.
"I'm very proud of the record," said The Mad Ripple. "I had to learn how to play the guitar and find my singing voice again and I'm happy I did. I also wanted to represent Minneapolis-St. Paul and the players on the record as best I could. The cover photo is of The Foshay Tower, which I've always loved. It's cool because it's not the biggest or the best, but it's got one of the only outdoor observational decks in the cities and you can see for miles. Plus, no one has flown a plane into it."
Sink and/or Swim features 12 Walsh-penned originals, including "Here Come The catholic Boys" (note small `c'); "Homebodies (Don't Be Careful With Your Love)," a duet with Gauthier; the nine-minute techno-grunge epic "Fixthebroke," co-penned with DJ ESP; and "A Question For Pat Dwyer at Grumpy's In Northeast Minneapolis."
